I personally just right click and use A+ Left click for most non last hitting things, such as moving out of base, chasing, going anywhere really, besides past jungle while jungler is having his farm.
It puts much less strain in the long run if you just master timing of right clicking, BUT.... that's also a reason why some use A left click, due to timing they have gained from using their A as a que into the last hit.

Because it brings up a targetting reticle so you can pretend you're pew-pewing the minions with your auto-attacks, duh.

Pretty much. Though I like to bring up a targetting reticle when playing a champ like Nautilus and then pretending he's trying to precision-aim his giant collateral man-anchor.
