I have this friend.
We call him CJ.
When we play LoL together CJ ALLWAYS buys boots and healthpots as starting items and i wonder...
Why does anyone need 419 speed at lvl 1?
Like he seriously got all movement speed masteries and playing MF went for boots and pots...
I told him not to because its totally not necessary, but he doesn't understand.
He is obviously not the best player, but lets forget about him for a second.
I'd like to talk about starting items and how they are good/bad in certain situations.
Have you thought that boots/pots suck for Ranged AD, but they are okay for any agressive/tanky Melee AD champion like Olaf?
Thats my opinion...
Then theres Cloth Armour and pots... where armour would benefit every time you take damage and be much better over time vs an item like Ruby Crystal
The same goes for Saphire Crystal vs Meki Pendant.
Where the longer you stay in lane the better Meki Pendant would be, and i figured since it gives you 7 mana / 5 sec, it would take 142,85 seconds to get 200 mana (what Saphire Crystal gives).
Thats all i have and i thought it was really interesting to think about and i will definitaly consider my starting items more than before...

... boots and 3 pots BAD for AD Carry...? Why...?
Ok, first up, more movement speed is always better, helps you run away if you get ganked, helps you dodge skillshots, helps you chase etc. I don't see how you could possibly see a 419 movement speed at level 1 MF as being bad. Imagine if Lee Sin ganks you at level 2 immediately after he gets red buff. Dodging his Q will be much easier with 419 move speed rather than 350~.
As for Cloth Armour vs Ruby Crystal I agree, although I can't say I can remember anyone getting a Ruby Crystal as first item in my past 100 or so games. Think I've seen it a total of once, on a Mundo.
But the same doesn't go for Meki Pendant vs Sapphire Crystal, after all, Ryze needs more max mana. And what If someone doesn't want to build something that needs a Meki Pendant? Such as Catalyst, or Sheen?

I don't know how high MF's passive ups MS, but I know with just boots whe does get decently high (above 400+ MS easy). Having that high of MS can actually be great. I know when sivir just came out, I would take teleport and take boots +3pots, get to lvl 2 or 3, push enemy (or kill) out of lane, go home buy lvl 2 boots and teleport to one of the lanes almost always resulting in 1 or 2 kills simply because I could literally run circles around them.
So if it is abused properly, it can be crippling to the other team.

Going against aggressive lane duo? Boots and pots.
You're in an aggressive lane duo? Boots and pots.
Only time I start Doran's is when opponents are without sustain (say blitz/AD carry or something similar) while I have a sustain support (Soraka, Sona etc.)

As far as Meki vs Sapphire Crystal: Yes, Meki lv 1 gives more mana overall... But what are you going to build it into? Outside of a few champions that have ToG or Chalice as a core item, most won't get an item that builds out of Meki. On the other hand, a lot of mages and several other champions can make good use of a Catalyst into RoA. Sapphire Crystal start gets you there sooner. In most cases, I'd rather get Boots 3 pots on mages and the others anyway. Mobility is just too strong of a stat.

Thanks for the sig, MagicalBaker(Hellbreaker)!

I only really see carries start with 3 sets of starting items these days, you'll get the odd person that does different but it doesn't really stratify from the core too much.
Boots + 3 Health Potions - Probably the most reliable start. The extra movespeed is great for positioning for ganks / escaping when being ganked and adds a little utility on the offense AND the defense, which is something not many other starting items will do.
Cloth armor + 5 Health Potions - A defensively geared start you'll usually see if the player is up against an aggressive bot lane and/or a potentially dangerous or poke heavy one. Grants far more staying power in lane than the boots start.
Doran's Blade - You'll see this one a lot but it's only really worth relying on as a starting item if you have a bot lane with a heal such as Soraka or Sona, even then you can probably still do just as well with a boots start. The health / damage / lifesteal is nice to have early, but if you get poked down you don't have potions to fall back on and are either going to end up pseudo-pushing your lane (to make use of the lifesteal sustain you chose to buy) or you're going to hang around at lowish life and risk getting sniped or dived. Again, this is without a heal support.
It's really up to personal preferance as to what you buy first, plenty of people outplay their opponents bot and make use of the extra dmg/hp a doran's gives and cream their opponents. But if you're unsure of whether you'll have trouble bot lane (but aren't scared enough to go a full Armor + 5 pots start) then just grab boots n 3 pots, it's a pretty versatile start that won't see you wrong on the front foot or the back foot.
