Is anyone else interested in this mod?

It's basically zombie survival mod for Arma 2 CO (and as far as I know you can make it work with OA and the F2P version of ARMA2). But unlike most zombie games, it offers a sandboxy gameplay and the whole goal isn't just to murder tons of zombies while going from A point to B, but to actually survive, any way you can. And that doesn't mean just to withstand/evade the packs of zombies and keep your supplies up, other human beings can (and very often will) choose to shot you on sight at any time to the point any encounter is an incredibly intense experience. And so on and so forth. Just read the two articles below to get the feeling:

http://www.rockpaper...dayz-part-zero/
http://www.rockpaper...day-z-part-two/

For me it sounds like the gameplay I wanted since pretty much forever and what other zombie games never delivered. I'll get it within a next days for sure. Be noted though that the mod is only in alpha, can be really buggy at times and might be a pain in the ass to set up, while the servers are usually full, but still, it sounds awesome.

Sounds really nice. Anyone tried the Walking Dead games yet? That, in my opinion, seems to be somewhat similar, focusing more on visual graphics and story mode than to butcher stuff.

Hoping that this game goes on sale in the summer sale. $30 is a bit steep and the mod seems like it could use a bit more polish so I can wait.

Hell no. The two has literally nothing in common. The Walking Dead is more like Fahrenheit/Indigo Prophecy (if the name means anything to you) kind of game where you go through a scripted story while being able to interact with various things in the environment to advance further.

The Day Z mod is sandbox based without any kind of storyline other than what you experience while playing and interacting with other people. Imagine a (really) huge and very realistic map with multiple cities and great distances between two. Add key points like hospitals, military camps where the good stuff (and many more zombies) spawn and the fact that you can kill other people for their kit (once someone dies, they respawn without anything). Very soon you end up with a very dynamic and player-driven world where bandits are most likely fully stacked with goods, protecting key points and hunting normal people who only wanted to refill their supplies. Other people might choose to live in the forest, avoiding cities at every cost, or teaming up with other people and specifically hunting bandits. And at the end, since the whole thing is ArmA based, your kit and weapons actually matter, and killing a people is not just shooting three bullets from far away, so the pressure to lose your precious M4 or something is extremely high.

As far as I know you can make it work with only purchasing OA and using the free version of ArmA2. That doesn't cost much.

I see. I was confused because the top-seller on Steam right now is the Combined Operations thing that costs $29.99.

In any case I'm still going to wait on this a bit :)

Amazon actually has the game for $14.99 right now but it's not redeemable on Steam :<

Yeah I'm aware. It went top seller just because of this mod basically. I saw a few people confirming that they made it work with OA and as far as I know CO is basically ArmA2+OA or something like that. I'll get my OA within the next few days then I can say more about it. I doubt I'd purchase CO just for this mod (I hate the ArmA gameplay in general) but OA is really cheap.

It's pretty hard to find a good video (given just the fact how the game actually works), but just to get a general feeling of starting out:
Spoiler

Also a helicopter raid with a full team (you will need a shitload of time to acquire a helicopter, and you will die 1000 times before you even make one, I guarantee that):
Spoiler

You are missing the whole point. L4D is as about shooting as many zombies as you can while traveling from point A to point B. Day Z is an actual survival simulator and it's more like a social experiment given the whole freedom of choice while also having permadeath. It's the closest thing to what a real zombie apocalypse would feel like socially. If you ever thought about that, this game is basically your dream as you can do exactly as you would in a real situation (rather than being forced to do something you don't want to, just because your character is scripted that way) and it can actually bring light on interesting behaviors people would have given the situation.

Should I join the bandits to feel safer and have better kits and supplies while killing innocent people? Should I keep my humanity while trying to evade both the zombies and the bandits? Should I try to restore peace by specifically hunting bandits? Should I live alone in the forest hunting animals? Can I trust anyone if I know that they can choose to kill me at any point or should I kill anyone on sight? I am hurt, should I risk getting eaten by zombies or killed by a pack of bandits trying to get into the hospital for medicine? And countless other questions throughout the (endless) game which drives your own story. This is incredibly appealing to me, maybe not so much for others. But I hope you get what I mean.

I'm playing the hell out of it right now, actually. Been my new addiction.

Little ticked right now cause I got ganked by a bandit after looting a bunch of shit, but oh well. That's life in the game. :| It's a fantastic game with friends.
