I'm still pretty new to the game but I've found myself reading more and more on this particular topic. Call me and noob or what have you but of all the champs I've tried I love Master Yi for jungling. I started out with the cloth 5 pots build like most but when I finally read someone's build and why they choose the vamp sceptor over the pots I had to try it. IMO if your champ has such a high base attack speed like Yi and some others the sceptor actually gives you more health during your first run through the jungle. I personally always build books into greaves first myself but the sceptor builds quick into a wriggles. Having wuju style boosts how much you get while using the vamp sceptor but I've just found over all it limits how often you have to go back to base which can be hurtful to a jungler who has to worry about counter jungling. All in all I think going sceptor first then on your first trip back to build your boots and start zeal is the best strategy. I realize this doesn't work for every champ but with a fed Yi ganking becomes no problem. Especially once you get highlander. His speed also helps him cover any lane when needed which is tough for some of the other good junglers. Cloth armor and 5 pots is the best way for newer players to start out jungling just because it leaves little room for error. But is always going to be better options and just sticking to what you know rather trying new things will eventually just put you farther behind the other team and even your team.

While it matters greatly as to which champion you are jungling with, I generally start boots3, for the sheer fact that I move through the jungle faster, and I have a decent gank potential compared to cloth where I am tanky, but nothing offensive, or vamp, once again 'tanky' but nothing offensive. Move speed may not seem offensive but when it helps you get to your target sooner and stay with them it helps. The only other item I have started with is regrowth on Amumu for a faster philo.
